Ode to Caffeine

The multiple benefits that we get from caffeine
can often and easily be clearly seen:
if you doubt me my friend, and are ready to leave,
just listen a moment; soon you'll believe!

When was the last time you happened upon
a colleague whose morning just had not gone
as smoothly as could be, or would have, if not
for the misfortune of an empty coffee pot?

While caffeine is admittedly an anti-depressant
which can cause chatter seemingly incessant
the talker is certainly feeling much calmer
than if the brewing had taken much longer!

So to all those who haven't felt the addiction
I give you this wisdom: to avoid the friction
caused by a drop in the blood-caffeine level,
break out the Jolt Cola or coffee and revel!

On Socializing

When your friends begin to try
out things designed to make you cry
out "please don't ask I really can't
and don't you see I therefore shan't"
Just remember that they're well-
sent and they are not really hell-
bent on pestering you 'til you
start to think "I'm going to kill you!"

Love And Sleep
Algernon Charles Swinburne

LYING asleep between the strokes of night
I saw my love lean over my sad bed,
Pale as the duskiest lily's leaf or head,
Smooth-skinned and dark, with bare throat made to bite,
Too wan for blushing and too warm for white,
But perfect-colored without white or red.
And her lips opened amorously, and said---
I wist not what, saving one word---Delight,
And all her face was honey to my mouth,
And all her body pasture to mine eyes;
The long lithe arms and hotter hands than fire,
The quivering flanks, hair smelling of the south,
The bright light feet, the splendid supple thighs
And glittering eyelids of my soul's desire.

The Quiet Fog
Marge Piercy

The pitch pines fade
into a whiteness
that has blotted the marsh.

Beyond
starts ten feet
outside the magic circle
of lit house.

The hill has dissolved.
The road ends
under a soft wall
that creeps.

Why am I happy?
I cradle my elbows
corners of a mirror
tall as childhood
reflecting nothing.
